As creative lead for Eindhoven's first Emancipation Festival celebrating the abolition of slavery in Dutch colonies, I developed a comprehensive visual identity balancing celebration with commemoration.
I crafted an identity honoring the historical significance of Keti Koti ("broken chains" in Sranan Tongo) while creating contemporary, engaging promotional materials. The vibrant yellow primary color symbolizes joy while providing high contrast for text and imagery, with traditional patterns incorporated as subtle background elements.
The festival's dual nature required separate yet complementary styles: more restrained design with darker accents for the commemorative ceremony on June 30th, and vibrant photography showing diverse celebrations for the festival on July 1st.
I designed a distinctive logotype for "Keti Koti Kadena Kibra" within a rounded yellow container, creating a recognizable brand element across applications. The system included posters, programs, social media templates, digital advertising, and merchandise.
The project extended into environmental applications at the festival, creating a cohesive experience throughout the venue. This project demonstrated my ability to handle culturally significant subject matter with sensitivity while developing a distinctive identity that successfully attracted diverse audiences to both commemorative and celebratory events, helping establish what is now becoming an annual tradition in Eindhoven.
